{"id":476,"date":"2010-05-04t06:00:06","date_gmt":"2010-05-04t06:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.vanderbilt.edu\/cft\/?p=476"},"modified":"2010-07-29t18:18:52","modified_gmt":"2010-07-29t18:18:52","slug":"call-for-proposals-cirtls-teaching-as-research-fellows-program-due-june-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"\/\/www.imrbdigital.com\/2010\/05\/call-for-proposals-cirtls-teaching-as-research-fellows-program-due-june-1\/","title":{"rendered":"call for proposals \u2013 cirtl teaching-as-research fellows program \u2013  due june 1, 2010"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"margin: 8px;\" title=\"cirtl logo\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-cft\/images\/cirtl_logo.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"172\" height=\"163\" \/>as part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cirtl.net\/\">cirtl network<\/a> activities at vanderbilt, the cft co-sponsors the teaching-as-research  (tar) fellows program for graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in  the stem (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) fields at  vanderbilt.\u00a0 the call for proposals for fall 2010 fellows can be found below.<\/p>\n<h3>i. general<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cirtl.net\/\">cirtl<\/a> is the center for  integration of research, teaching  and learning.\u00a0 it is a network of   institutions, led by the university   of wisconsin, with the  aim of  increasing the preparation of future faculty in teaching.\u00a0 vanderbilt is  one of the cirtl  partners.<\/p>\n<h3>ii. awards<\/h3>\n<p>the  vu cirtl group wishes to offer topping-up awards of $3,000  each for  semester-long commitments of teaching assistants, post  doctoral fellows or  graduate students to engage in a \u201cteaching as  research\u201d (tar) project for fall  2010.\u00a0 a maximum of 6 awards is   available. this can be received as additional stipend for us citizens  and  permanent residents.\u00a0 it must replace  other support for  international students.<\/p>\n<h3>iii. teaching as research<\/h3>\n<p>cirtl  defines tar as follows: &#8220;teaching-as-research involves  the deliberate,  systematic, and reflective use of research methods to  develop and implement  teaching practices that advance the learning  experiences and outcomes of  students and teachers.&#8221; examples may be  found on <a href=\"\/\/www.imrbdigital.com\/\">the cft&#8217;s website<\/a>. other examples are provided  on <a href=\"http:\/\/129.59.92.138\/white_papers.html\">the vanth website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>the goals of our program are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>to provide faculty with       resources for designing and  assessing curricular innovations,<\/li>\n<li>to provide graduate       students and other future faculty  members with training and development in       the design and assessment  of teaching and learning activities, and<\/li>\n<li>to benefit the learning of       undergraduate students  through the development and assessment of       curricular innovations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>iv. proposal format<\/h3>\n<p>directors of graduate study and faculty instructors in stem   disciplines are invited to propose support for fall 2010.\u00a0 please send a  proposal to thomas r. harris at <a href=\"mailto:thomas.r.harris@vanderbilt.edu\">thomas.r.harris@vanderbilt.edu<\/a> or box 1724  station b, vanderbilt   university by <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>june 1,   2010<\/strong>.<\/span> the proposal format is as follows:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>name of teaching assistant or other graduate student for   whom support is sought.<\/li>\n<li>department name<\/li>\n<li>faculty mentor (with signature)<\/li>\n<li>director of graduate studies (with signature)<\/li>\n<li>course that project will benefit.<\/li>\n<li>brief description of project (no more than one page).\u00a0 this  should emphasize the instructional  innovations that will be developed  and the assessment of effectiveness.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>students in stem fields pursuing the 2022年世界杯中国小组赛积分&#8217;s   teaching certificate program are encouraged to apply for this support.\u00a0  tar fellows can receive teaching certificate  credit for their  cirtl-sponsored projects.\u00a0  contact the cft for more information.<\/p>\n<p>all selected applicants must make every effort to do the   following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>must attend a teaching workshop at the beginning of the   fall semester. the workshop will include an orientation to   teaching-as-research.<\/li>\n<li>should sign up for the following 1 hour course:bme  395:\u00a0 preparation for teaching<br \/>\nfall  2010,tuesday 2:10-4, dr. stacy s. klein<br \/>\nbme  395.\u00a0 preparation for teaching.\u00a0 basics of curriculum  design, assessment,  accreditation.\u00a0 diversity in the  classroom and  classroom management.\u00a0  technology for teaching, assessment, and  communication.\u00a0 basics of k-12 outreach.\u00a0 open to graduate students in  all stem  disciplines wishing to pursue college\/university teaching.\u00a0  fall.\u00a0  [1].<\/li>\n<li>meet  weekly during the fall semester in a working group  facilitated by center for  teaching staff.\u00a0\u00a0 the working group will   provide fellows with feedback and support as they design and implement  their  projects.<\/li>\n<li>submit to thomas r.  harris a 2 page report by january 15,  2011 of the results of this project and  present a poster of their  results.
