undergraduate, graduate  and professional students; post-docs; and staff<\/p>\n<p>the 2008 french film <em><a title=\"http:\/\/www.sonyclassics.com\/theclass\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sonyclassics.com\/theclass\/\" target=\"_blank\">entre les murs (the class)<\/a><\/em> presents a year in the life of a french language and literature class in an  inner city middle school in paris.\u00a0  the film, <a title=\"http:\/\/uk.reuters.com\/article\/idukn2252964520080525\" href=\"http:\/\/uk.reuters.com\/article\/idukn2252964520080525\" target=\"_blank\">winner<\/a> of the palme d\u2019or at the 2008 cannes film festival, is based on the  2006 semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by fran\u00e7ois  b\u00e9gaudeau.\u00a0 it stars b\u00e9gaudeau along with a cast of non-actors using  improvisational acting and documentary-style filmmaking.\u00a0 the entire  film takes place at the school\u2014in its classrooms, teachers lounge,  library, and schoolyard\u2014giving the view a fly-on-the-wall view into the  social and interpersonal dynamics among students and teachers.\u00a0  b\u00e9gaudeau, as the teacher fran\u00e7ois marin, attempts to understand and  engage his culturally and cognitively diverse students, and his students  respond in a variety of inspiring, provocative, and antagonistic ways.<\/p>\n<p>following the screening, cft assistant director derek bruff will lead  a discussion of the film, focusing on questions raised by the teacher\u2019s  instructional choices and his students\u2019 responses to those choices.\u00a0  for example, how can you motivate students in a required course on a  subject (grammar in this case) the students see as irrelevant to their  lives?\u00a0 how can you navigate the challenges and opportunities that come  with teaching a class of culturally diverse students?\u00a0 how can you  respond to moments of conflict and confrontation in the classroom?\u00a0 and  how can attempts to connect with students as people, not just pupils,  become problematic?<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>faculty, students, and staff interested in teaching and  classroom dynamics (in secondary or post-secondary settings) are  encouraged to attend and join the discussion. there is no registration  for this event. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>entre les murs (the class): connection and conflict in the classroom (part of vanderbilt\u2019s international lens film series) time &amp;
