by vivian finch, cft graduate teaching fellow<\/em><\/p>\n <\/a>“thinking stem, teaching stem” is a blog series that spotlights some of the videos produced at vanderbilt for the cirtl mooc course, \u201can introduction to evidence-based undergraduate stem teaching.<\/strong>\u201d this course drew on the\u00a0expertise of experienced stem faculty,\u00a0educational researchers, and representatives of university teaching centers.\u00a0 as previously mentioned, the series will loosely follow the thematic trajectory of the course through the following topics:<\/p>\n this week we\u2019re moving into a new topic: the role of lectures. \u00a0if you would like to see other installments of this blog series, please click the tag \u201cthinking stem, teaching stem\u201d at the bottom of this post.\u00a0 to access the videos featured in this series on youtube, please the cft’s\u00a0youtube channel<\/a> or go directly to our\u00a0blog playlist here<\/a>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n a common image of a stem college classroom is the lecture hall.\u00a0 everything about the lecture hall as a learning space promotes the lecture-based pedagogical approach: the space is often large, the fixed stadium style seats all face forward, there is a projector and screen towards the front of the space.\u00a0 this space is built around the idea that lecture-based instruction is a preferred teaching method in undergraduate stem education.\u00a0 evidence-based research, however, doesn\u2019t necessarily support this preference.<\/p>\n in the following video, dr. derek bruff, director of the 2022年世界杯中国小组赛积分, discusses research that suggests stem classrooms would benefit more from building active learning exercises into classroom time rather than strictly adhering to the traditional lecture format.\u00a0 additionally, dr. bruff poses (and explores) the following question: given the research on active learning, why do you think lectures are so common in the undergraduate stem classroom?<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n\n
