from last week\u2019s workshop on digital writing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>during last week&#8217;s &#8220;digital writing: using social media to enhance the teaching of writing&#8221; workshop, cft assistant director derek bruff tweeted some highlights from the panelist remarks and subsequent conversation.\u00a0 for those of you not following the <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/vandycft\">cft on twitter<\/a>, you&#8217;ll find derek\u2019s comments below.\u00a0 please also visit the <a several course blogs by vanderbilt faculty.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"status-body\"><span class=\"entry-content\">english prof jay clayton talking about his \u201cworlds of wordcraft\u201d course on narrative and virtual worlds. course blog: <a class=\"tweet-url web\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/is.gd\/8bd7d\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/is.gd\/8bd7d<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"status-body\"><span class=\"entry-content\">jay had students use own blogs the 1st time, but that led to too many tech problems. upshot: don\u2019t let the tech get in the way of learning.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"status-body\"><span class=\"entry-content\">jay shares his blog traffic stats w\/his students (up to 30-40k hits over the life of the blog). gives the students a real sense of audience.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"status-body\"><span class=\"entry-content\">another takeaway from jay: *informal* blog writing helped students better understand the *formal writing* they did in the course.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"status-body\"><span class=\"entry-content\">jay\u2019s students\u2019 posts were informal, but not sloppy. grammar, spelling, mechanical errors weren\u2019t allowed.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"status-body\"><span class=\"entry-content\">jay\u2019s current course is on genetics and student tags.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"status-body\"><span class=\"entry-content\">jay wants his students to tag their posts. it helps them contextualize their contributions and drives blog traffic.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"status-body\"><span class=\"entry-content\">now hearing from jane robbins from leadership, policy, &amp; organizations at peabody college. leadership course blog: <a class=\"tweet-url web\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/is.gd\/8bfvn\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/is.gd\/8bfvn<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/is.gd\/8bfmr<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"status-body\"><span class=\"entry-content\">jane gives her students a strict word count limit. wants her students to practice concise, professional writing. but 250 words is too few.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"status-body\"><span class=\"entry-content\">jane robbins: brings student blog posts into the classroom discussion. this keeps the blog work from being disconnected to rest of class.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"status-body\"><span class=\"entry-content\">jane requires students to subscribe to the blog via email or rss. that way they stay more regularly involved in the blog discussion.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"status-body\"><span class=\"entry-content\">here\u2019s a great post from jane\u2019s leadership course blog on superhero leadership: <a class=\"tweet-url web\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/is.gd\/8bh0f.\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/is.gd\/8bh0f.<\/a> lots of peer comments.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"status-body\"><span class=\"entry-content\">jane: course blogs do a great job of creating community among students, extending and applying the in-class discussion.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"status-body\"><span class=\"entry-content\">next up: gabe cervantes on using twitter in his \u201clives of slavery\u201d course, an upper-level writing course on bios and autobios.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"status-body\"><span class=\"entry-content\">gabe showing what\u2019s out on twitter by searching for <a class=\"tweet-url hashtag\" title=\"#literature\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23literature\">#literature<\/a> and showing the user @<a class=\"tweet-url username\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/emersonralphyw\">emersonralphyw<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"status-body\"><span class=\"entry-content\">gabe: i\u2019ve been commuting to and from school as a student or teacher for as long as lady gaga has been alive.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"status-body\"><span class=\"entry-content\">gabe on twitter vs. email: twitter better for short, timely messages. also puts more responsibility on students to stay current.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"status-body\"><span class=\"entry-content\">gabe cervantes now analyzing the twitter bird as a metaphor. drawing connections to emerson\u2019s writing and nature.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"status-body\"><span class=\"entry-content\">emerson: \u201clanguage must be raked\u2026\u201d language is something that has to be worked on, managed, curated, patterned.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"status-body\"><span class=\"entry-content\">gabe\u2019s next course will require students to post quotes from the reading on a course twitter account.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"status-body\"><span class=\"entry-content\">why? should capture ephemeral responses to reading\u2013what usually receives highlighting, underlining, or margin comments.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"status-body\"><span class=\"entry-content\">also, literarary writers work by quoting and integrating the works of others. students tweeting quotes brings them into this tradition.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"status-body\"><span class=\"entry-content\">hmm, that should have been \u201cliterary\u201d not \u201cliterarary.\u201d will gabe count off for typos in his course?<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"status-body\"><span class=\"entry-content\">interesting comments about the public nature of course blogs. students are writing to each other, but the public can \u201clisten in.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"status-body\"><span class=\"entry-content\">jay clayton: course blogs, esp. w\/large readerships, help students see themselves as producers, not just consumers, of knowledge.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"status-body\"><span class=\"entry-content\">jay: when students see what search terrms are leading visitors to the blog, they find out that, say, high school students are reading them.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"status-body\"><span class=\"entry-content\">jay clayton creates categories for the course blog, like a table of contents. students can make up their own tags, however.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"status-body\"><span class=\"entry-content\">great discussion on the use of tags (students tagging their own posts, others\u2019 posts) to help students synthesize course material.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"status-body\"><span class=\"entry-content\">one idea: no tags throughout the semester on course blog. then give each student a copy of the whole blog
