cft assistant directors publish study on graduate student sotl programs
assistant directors nancy chick and cynthia brame have just published their findings from a study of vanderbilt graduate students’ research and experiences in the cft’s programs in the scholarship of teaching and learning (sotl). “an investigation of the products and impact of graduate student sotl programs: observations and recommendations from a single institution” was published in january in the international journal of the scholarship of teaching and learning (ij-sotl), an open, double-blind peer-reviewed journal. ij-sotl explains sotl and its focus:
“anchored in inquiry and engagement, the scholarship of teaching and learning re-conceptualizes teaching as an ongoing and scholarly process with an emphasis on bringing about improved student learning (huber & morreale, 2002). sotl is a key way to support the continuous transformation of academic communities and cultures.”
nancy and cynthia’s study identified patterns in graduate students’ early experiences with sotl, specifically the research choices made while carrying out their first sotl projects and their perceptions of the impact of the program. nancy and cynthia analyzed 72 project posters and 39 impact survey responses. drawn from the rich particularities of a single institution, this study offers insight into novice sotl work and recommendations for developing introductory sotl programs on other campuses.
