each year, the cft newsletter highlights the work of our junior faculty teaching fellows<\/a>.\u00a0this month,\u00a0<\/span>michelle marcus<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>,\u00a0<\/b>economics, talks about some of the lessons she has gained from the fellowship.<\/span><\/p>\n

the junior faculty teaching fellows program has been an invaluable opportunity to reflect on my own\u00a0<\/span>teaching practices and to<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0enhance my teaching efficiency and skills. through teaching seminars, peer<\/span>–<\/span>groups, individual consultations with cft members, clas<\/span>sroom visits, and my own reflections on\u00a0<\/span>teaching, i\u2019ve come to a greater appreciation of the diverse needs of my students and the ways in which\u00a0<\/span>i can improve accessibility to learning in my classroom. by creating clear class goals and re<\/span>–<\/span>designing\u00a0<\/span>course c<\/span>ontent and assignments towards achieving those learning goals, i can provide students with a\u00a0<\/span>clearer connection between class material and learning objectives.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

restructuring course content, thinking about student learning needs, and providing additional\u00a0assignments designed to scaffold up student learning and build upon previous knowledge have been key\u00a0components to the re-design of my course. as an example, my course includes a small group final\u00a0project which is a culmination of the skills they\u2019ve learned throughout the course and gives students an\u00a0opportunity to apply those skills to a real-world research topic related to their own interests.to make\u00a0this assessment and the goals of the project clearer, i\u2019ve worked with the students to create a rubric for\u00a0the final project that takes into account their own thoughts about how the project and teamwork should\u00a0be assessed. to help the groups scaffold up towards the final presentation, i\u2019ve introduced check-in\u00a0points for different required elements of the project, such as their question of interest, background\u00a0research, and their research design. this provides an additional opportunity for me to give feedback and\u00a0guidance on their project and content prior to the presentation.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

the jftf program provides a great opportunity to leverage the teaching expertise of our excellent\u00a0colleagues across campus and at the 2022年世界杯中国小组赛积分. through conversations with these colleagues, i\u00a0have been inspired to incorporate new technology and teaching methods into my course, which has\u00a0already improved student learning. in future semesters, i plan to continue these improvements in\u00a0course design by flipping my classroom, which will provide more time for in class discussion, group-learning, and allowing students to make connections on their own between course material and\u00a0important real-world issues. i really appreciate the opportunity to participate in the jftf program this\u00a0year and hope that other junior faculty members will take advantage of this program and all the\u00a0resources available through vanderbilt\u2019s 2022年世界杯中国小组赛积分.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
