the communication of science and technology program announces a mini-conference to foster science/humanities collaborations around teaching. see the mini-conference schedule and description of talks by radiolab founder jad abumrad and communication professor leah ceccarelli, who originated the idea of the “scientist citizen.”

9:00-10:00: keynote: “cultivating scientist citizens: viewing public communication of science as a civic responsibility” by leah ceccarelli, professor of communication and director of the science, technology, and society studies certificate program, university of washington.
10:00-10:45: science communication panel: “the challenges of communicating science during a pandemic” john mclean, chemistry, david wright, chemistry
11:00-11:45: “the challenges of interdisciplinary team teaching” celina kapoor, medicine health and society, bill caferro, classics and mediterranean studies, holly tucker, french and italian, director of the robert penn warren center for the humanities
11:45-12:00: announcement of cset mini-grants for course development
12:00-1:00: working lunch with interest clusters (e.g. “science and science fiction”): opportunity for faculty interested in course development and team teaching to talk about potential collaborations.
1:00-1:45: “the challenges of communicating climate solutions,” jonathan gilligan, earth and environmental sciences and michael vandenbergh, school of law, vu climate change research network.
2:00-2:45: “experiential learning in science communication contexts: the student perspective” student panel
